Recently, I had the opportunity to help a colleague teach teens Joomla! It was a great experience, being able to share with newbies what Joomla can do. Below is the write-up that appeared in the July 2020 edition of the Joomla Community Magazine.

Whether you want to create a business website or start a blog, the most efficient way to do so is with a Content Management System (CMS). A CMS is ideal for the entrepreneur who does not have HTML or CSS coding skills or cannot access developer talent.
In the last decade, there have been numerous CMS solutions to choose from, one of which is Joomla. Having relied on this CMS for many years, I have put together the 10 reasons why it works for me and why it should be your CMS of choice:

Today marks 13 years of RSJoomla! providing Joomla! extensions.
RSJoomla! is the maker of RSForm! Pro and RSEvents! Pro (as well as many others) extensions that have appeared in our Favorite Extensions presentation for Joomla! User Group Chicago North (JUGCN). The functionality, ease of use, continuous innovation, and support puts them on the list time and time again. One such innovation is the Zoom Video Conferencing integration, which is very timely with the change in how we gather.

One of our clients at WebLab42 is a public health and safety organisation in The Netherlands aiming to protect the safety of everyone in the region. Police, fire squad and health and safety institutes work together in this organization. During the Covid-19 situation, we got a phone call from our contact: “Could you help us out? We need a tool to gather data from all kinds of health institutes on a daily basis, and we need this integrated in our website. And it needs to be up and running next Tuesday.”
The client needed to collect information about contamination, need for personal protection and available beds in all the health facilities in the region. How many people have tested positive on the virus in nursing homes, in mental health institutes, at shelters for the homeless? What is the exact situation on personal protection in these facilities? And where can we find extra beds, should the crisis run out of hand?

Do you remember when the only website building options for businesses were HTML static pages with fixed content, or dynamic websites with lively content, but they required a substantial amount of coding to build? If you lacked the knowledge of CSS and HTML or did not hire someone who did have these skills, then you had to go without a website for your business. My, how things have changed. Luckily, you now have the option to use a free Content Management System (CMS), like Joomla, where you no longer have to use these difficult and sometimes costly methods.
Joomla is a Content Management System, which offers your business the ability to build websites and powerful online applications. As your CMS, Joomla provides you and your team with website collaboration, authoring, multi-user permission levels, and administrative tools. It is user-friendly and does not require you to have technical or coding skills. Webmasters can efficiently manage various content types, different resources, and data, necessary to have a website, today. This Customer Management System, is one of the most, popular, open-source, and free website softwares. Your website benefits from using Joomla, as it makes your site, mobile-friendly, fully extensible, multilingual, flexible, accessible, responsive, search engine optimized and much more. Over the years Joomla has won several awards, including their most recent one in 2018, for ‘The Best Free CMS.’ If your company’s goals are to create memorable online customer experiences and to grow your online presence with the efforts of landing more sales, then you must learn how to build your business website using Joomla. So, what is Joomla? It is your websites soon-to-be best friend. Still, before you can learn the “How,” of Joomla, you must first understand the “Why.”

As we look forward to the passing of another year, the ever-changing web industry offers new challenges and problems for web developers. Technology is quickly moving forward with every decade our overall rate of progress doubling, and no signs of slowing down. With the rise of AI and with Elon Musk's Neuralink company ready to implant devices, these giant leaps in technology make it unclear of what the internet will be in just the next decade. For now, there are several things you can do to make sure your Joomla business is vital for the current market.
If you are a Joomla user, you are a Joomler, but are you promoting yourself as a Joomler? Sander Potijer started the Joomler community page in 2014, and currently, there are less than 2,000 registered Joomlers. For me, it was an undeniable choice, but resulted in something not so obvious - Job Offers! In just one month I had four people contacting me about hiring me for some freelance projects. Showing the world, you are a Joomler by creating a Joomler profile page is simple - Get started today: https://volunteers.joomla.org/joomlers

The web has completely changed since its birth, 25 years ago. It has changed from a small niche group of users to a global user base in just a few years. Out have sprung the giants of Tech and the tools to produce and manage ever more content online. Over that time the ecosphere of web creation tools has changed. For example the advent of mobile phones has forced us to change the way we build our websites. Joomla has also had to evolve over the years to stay alive. Even a strong community and good quality code is not enough to keep your place in this competitive world.
In 2014 I decided to help Joomla with the skills I had at hand. I became involved in many different projects. I got the chance to participate in several international meetings. Each of these meetings gave me the opportunity to get to know and exchange ideas with exceptional people from all over the world. Many have become my friends.

All volunteer communities have to address the same issues at some point. How to recognise the work of volunteers? How to acknowledge their contributions?
Joomla is no different. For 14 years we've faced these issues without finding an answer.

After a year without a JWC in 2018, the board were eager to bring together the Joomla! Community with a World Conference in 2019. London was chosen as a venue and the dates were announced for November 2019.
Planning for this event was at an advanced stage and tickets were being sold. Then the deadline for Brexit was extended to 31st October 2019 and in the last week the new UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has been elected with a mandate to ensure Brexit happens on 31st October, even if that means without any form of deal with the EU.

Privacy Laws like GDPR introduced several new requirements that changed the way we think the data management and the pathway to the privacy compliance.
Privacy by design and by default were just some of the requirements that web developers should take under consideration before they develop new apps. But of course, apps were online also before GDPR effectiveness and as expected the Joomla Project and more specifically the Joomla Compliance Team, has started to evaluate the current situation to result to effective, security and privacy solutions.

As of release 3.5 Joomla is collecting stats data, thanks to the stats plugin (only works if it’s enabled), and it found too many websites are not using the currently supported release of 3.9.2. This data is based on the Joomla, PHP, and database version. These are some pretty alarming statistics, and should not be ignored! We have provided some links at the bottom of this article for your reference, review, and to even get the latest release of Joomla.

A report by Check Point Research has been brought to our attention relating to a security vulnerability that was patched back in December 2015. This report has also been picked up by Threat Post.
Both reports contain a great deal of inaccuracies and intimate that the vulnerability detailed is a current one.
This statement serves to clarify the facts surrounding this issue. Furthermore we would like to assure our user base that, much as these posts attempt to state that this is a current issue, the truth of the matter is far from that.
